(26 mar. 1850, Chicopee Falls, Mass., EE.UU.–22 may. 1898, Chicopee Falls).

Escritor estadounidense. A los 18 años, mientras estudiaba en Alemania, adquirió conciencia por primera vez de la grave situación de los desposeídos que habitan en las ciudades. A lo largo de su vida se comprometió con diversas causas progresistas y escribió varios volúmenes donde se reflejaban estos intereses; sin embargo, debe su fama a la novela utópica Año 2000: una visión retrospectiva (1888), donde imagina EE.UU. durante el año 2000 como un Estado socialista ideal cimentado en la fraternidad y la cooperación, con una industria orientada a satisfacer las necesidades humanas. La novela vendió más de un millón de ejemplares, y tuvo una continuación, Equality [Igualdad] (1897), que no alcanzó el éxito de la anterior.
